- Listen to the title and look at the cover picture. Is the story about animals or people? Is it a silly story or one that could happen in real life?
- Tell someone what you think the story will be about.
- Look at each page. Think about what you see. Tell about it in your own words.
- Are there people in the story? What are they doing? What do you think they could be saying? Can you make your voice show how they feel?
- What happens at the end of the story? Is it a happy ending?
- Go back and tell someone the story in your own words.
As new little readers go home please keep them together to pull from. You can read the story to your child and ask questions, have your child read it to you while you ask questions, or share the reading and expand their thinking as you go through the story by making connections or furthering their comprehension. You will see that the stories include our sight words and/or follow a concept/theme/holiday that corresponds with the happenings of our classroom. You will also notice that the readers will increase in word count, sentence length, and story length as your child's fluency, comprehension and word skills improve. The more we read with our little learners the more they will show success in other areas. Happy Reading! =]
